Former F1 World Champions, team-mates and bitter sparring-partners Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have both been penalised following their scrap that ultimately - and perhaps predictably - ended in tears in today's Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

With Hamilton battling against an increasing loss of grip from his Pirelli tyres, Alonso homed in during the latter stages of the race, but after closely tracking the McLaren-Mercedes for a while in the duel over the final podium spot, the Ferrari star got a little too close for comfort heading towards Turn Four of the Sepang International Circuit on lap 46 and the front wing of his F150? Italia touched the right rear wheel of the MP4-26.

The resultant damage saw Alonso and Hamilton take the chequered flag in Kuala Lumpur respectively sixth and seventh, but FIA stewards have since handed down 20-second post-race penalties to both, the Spaniard for causing the collision and the Briton for having been deemed to have made more than one change of direction in defending his place.

Although the time addition does not affect Alonso's finishing position, Hamilton drops to eighth behind Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi.
