HRT F1 refugee Tonio Liuzzi will race in the Italian-based SuperStars touring car series this season, having agreed to join other former grand prix pilots in an star-studded line-up.

The former Toro Rosso and Force India pilot was revealed as part of the 2012 field at Milan's Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia, lining up alongside Gianni Morbidelli, who will drive the brand-new Audi RS5, and former F3000 hopeful Thomas Biagi, who will be returning aboard a BMW M3. Two other F1 drivers of years past, Christian Fittipaldi and Mika Salo, were revealed as drivers of Swiss Racing Team's Maserati Quattroportes, while Johnny Herbert is also expected to return after a solid 2011 campaign. Liuzzi, who raced NASCAR derivatives in the Middle East during his last break from F1, is scheduled to drive CAAL Racing's Mercedes C63 AMG in the SuperStars series, but remains hopeful that a grand prix opportunity will come his way. He was part of the HRT line-up that launched the team's F112 in Barcelona prior to the Australian Grand Prix.

"I'm persuaded that SuperStars is a great choice to open yourself to other categories than F1," Liuzzi said, "and it really fits for me, considering my adaptable nature. SuperStars is a really important championship that lines-up great drivers and teams. I'm sure that this season will be extremely spectacular."

The 2012 season will kick off at Monza on 1 April, before taking in Imola, Vallelunga, Spa-Francorchamps, Portimao, the Hungaroring and Donington Park before closing its schedule with a first-ever Asian round at Sentul in Indonesia. Series overseer Maurizio Flammini has already revealed plans to expand into the United States for 2013, and Brazil in 2014.
