Cosworth's continued interest in being an F1 engine supplier could rest of the shoulders of a former team principal, but one who has been more closely linked to rallying and sportscars, after Prodrive was linked to a possible rescue bid for the US-owned grand prix stalwart.

Reports in the British Times newspaper earlier this week claimed that current owners Gerry Forsythe and Kevin Kalkhoven had performed a U-turn on possible flotation plans and decided to sell off the company it bought from Ford some eight years ago. Having supplied engines to F1 since the 1963 season, Cosworth is something of an icon in the sport but, despite plans to continue under the new regulations in 2014, it could disappear should a buyer not be found.

Rolls-Royce and GKN have both been touted as potential white knights for the brand, which currently supplies powerplants to both Marussia and HRT and has diversified into the aerospace and defence markets in a bid to broaden its portfolio, but Prodrive is apparently keen to test the waters despite an alleged ?40m price tag.

'We've just started to take a look at Cosworth, although I think they have rather over-priced themselves," Prodrive boss - and former BAR team principal - David Richards conceded to, "Nonetheless, it's worth a look."

Prodrive is rumoured to be looking for a way back into F1 following its brief association with BAR, and even tabled a successful bid to fill one of the vacancies on an expanded grid in 2008, before eventually withdrawing for financial reasons. It currently oversees GT and WRC programmes with Aston Martin and Mini respectively.
