Lewis Hamilton restored a little of Mercedes' dented pride by putting his car on pole position for a German Grand Prix where team-mate Nico Rosberg missed the top ten run-off.

The Briton twice bettered Sebastian Vettel's best effort to top the timesheets with a 1min 29.398secs effort, but will have the reigning world champion lining up alongside him after Mercedes was restricted to a single contender by a tactical error that eliminated British GP winner Rosberg in Q2.

Behind Vettel, Mark Webber shares row two with potential Red Bull replacement Kimi Raikkonen, while Romain Grosjean and Daniel Ricciardo fill out the top six as Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber played a different strategy by opting to run on the harder medium compound tyre.

Indeed, Jenson Button and Nico Hulkenberg opted not to set a time, while Felipe Massa edged Fernando Alonso in the 'battle' for seventh.
