Jean-Eric Vergne says the extra responsibility he has at Toro Rosso is a challenge which he is relishing.

With Daniel Ricciardo moving to Red Bull for 2014, Toro Rosso promoted rookie Daniil Kvyat in to a race seat alongside Vergne. Issues in pre-season testing have limited the track time for both drivers, but speaking exclusively to in Bahrain Vergne said he was happy to shoulder more expectation to lead the recovery as the more experienced driver.

"I believe they expect from me the day we are trouble-free to perform straight away and not to be a lap or two late," Vergne said. "I am pretty happy with this position and I am quite happy to move the team forward. I have more responsibility for sure but it's a role that I like."

Problems with the Renault power unit has been one cause of the lack of running for Toro Rosso, but Vergne said he is not allowing himself to be overly affected by any developments from the engine manufacturer.

"I don't want to be encouraged because I don't want to be up and then down. I just stay normal with the right level of positiveness; nothing too exciting, nothing too bad and just keeping the same. Hopefully we will be good for Melbourne but I will keep calm anyway even if it's good or bad."
