Max Verstappen has declared himself pleased following his first day with the new STR11, adding that the Ferrari power unit 'felt good straight away'.

Verstappen took over from team-mate Carlos Sainz on Tuesday for day two of the opening F1 2016 pre-season test at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and while the young Dutchman ended up slowest, he added that times weren't the focus. Indeed he completed 112 laps in total, despite an electrical issue in the morning.

"Yeah, [a] very good [start]!" he said at the end of the day. "You always want to do as much as you can and I think it was quite optimal today, for us we understand the car, just make mileage and do a lot of long runs.

"We didn't really focus on the times, just get used to the car together with the [new] engine package, because it was all new for us, just do a lot of laps. We stayed on the medium tyres, they were quite good."

Quizzed on the difference between the Ferrari power unit and the Renault, which Toro Rosso had in 2015, he replied: "More top speed!"

"It was nice to finally discover it and it felt good straight away," he added.

Meanwhile, Verstappen confirmed that the car will look rather different next week, and not only in terms of livery, which will be revealed on March 1.

"Yeah, of course [it was a bit of rush, given how late the engine deal was confirmed]. It was a lot of hard work, but they got it ready in time to be here and that was quite impressive. We are all very happy that we can do a lot of laps. And then for sure we will get some updates because I mean the car was quite on the limit in time, so we couldn't bring all the parts [here this week]."
