Nico Rosberg says at the moment of his first turn clash with Lewis Hamilton he was 'massively pissed off' but after cooling down he accepts it is part of tough racing.

After the Mercedes duo crawled off the start line which let Sebastian Vettel blast into the lead, Rosberg was pushed off the track at turn one due to contact with Hamilton as the British driver ran wide.

Cutting back on to the track at the exit of turn two Rosberg had lost most of his momentum which left him helpless to drop down to ninth place.

As a result, Rosberg's race was compromised battling back through the pack and his charge was dampened by a slow right-rear puncture which forced him to pit again on lap 52, before an penultimate lap attack on Max Verstappen for fourth saw him slide off at the final chicane.

The German driver recovered to take a frustrating fifth place and sees his F1 championship lead slashed to nine points as Hamilton duly won the Canadian Grand Prix from Sebastian Vettel.

"I was massively pissed off in the moment, but in the end that's just racing on the edge, tough racing and that's it," Rosberg told Sky Sports F1. "I gave it a go round the outside. In Barcelona it worked out, here it didn't work out, and that's it.

"Of course very, very frustrating but it's my job to make sure that I'm ahead after a battle like that today and it just didn't work out today."

Running in turbulent air behind the competitive Williams, Red Bull and Ferrari cars Rosberg's warning lights on his steering wheel lit up but he was determined to fight and try to get back past Verstappen in the closing laps.

"I was really low on fuel, because of battling all the way through and always having to overtake," he said. "It was difficult to understand how low. I knew the number was massively red and didn't know if I was going to get to the end of the race. I did a huge lift and coast lap at the end with Kimi on the last lap just to carry it over the finish line.

"The whole race was so complicated with a lot of things and of course I got the puncture as well which probably lost me a podium, I'm quite sure, so quite a frustrating day."
