Nico Rosberg says Lewis Hamilton often returns to his best after a difficult patch so he is solely focusing on maintaining his momentum in the charge to the F1 world title.

The German driver battled back from a first turn shunt with Sebastian Vettel and a collision with the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen to take third place at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Coupled with Hamilton's dramatic exit with an engine blowout Rosberg extended his advantage to 23 points with five races remaining but is refusing to look at the long game as he expects a full fightback from Hamilton at Suzuka.

"I know that when Lewis has difficulties like that he will come back fully motivated. So it's not very encouraging to know he is going to come back as strong as ever," Rosberg said. "Do I feel blessed? No, because I don't really think about Lewis' misfortune, I think more about my situation. My situation was a pretty tough day in general. I'm very fortunate, yes."

For the Japanese Grand Prix, all Mercedes engines will run a more conservative oil specification while any new engines have been delayed until after the race to give the German manufacturer time to understand the issue which sparked up in Sepang.

Rosberg says he isn't concerned that a similar issue could scupper him in Japan and feels the engine issues won't have a direct bearing on the F1 world title race.

"I'm not worried because I have learned to put my energy into something I can influence, and that's something I can definitely influence," he said. "I also have all the trust in the team that they do all they can to make sure they don't happen again.

"They have come with certain changes for this weekend here, but am I worried it will decide the championship? No, that's all very far away. Usually on average it evens out over a season."
