Get the full RACE RESULTS for the Chinese Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas says he apologised to everyone at Mercedes for his 'silly' mistake when he slid off trying to get heat into his tyres during the safety car period in the Chinese Grand Prix.

The Finnish driver made a bright start to the race in Shanghai before dropping to fifth place as Mercedes double stacked its drivers during a quick switch to dry tyres under the safety car which saw him return to the action in fifth.

However, disaster struck for the Mercedes driver when weaving to generate heat into his tyres he lost control of his W08 and slid on to the grass to drop down to 12th by the restart.

Despite battling back to sixth place by the chequered flag, Bottas remained crestfallen and is already focused on making amends next time out in Bahrain.

"I apologised to everyone. It was a silly mistake," Bottas said. "I guess these things happen but it feels pretty shit when it happens to you. The main thing is not to do it again and I'm glad Bahrain is already in one week. The worst thing to do now would be not stop thinking about that mistake.

"I need to understand how I can improve in the future and need to move on. I know the pace is there, I can do very good things with the car and as a team we did a stringer job, in terms of car pace, that what we had done on Sunday in Melbourne. I just need to keep going and the results will come."

The Mercedes driver's slip saw him drop to fourth in the F1 world drivers' championship behind Max Verstappen who claimed an impressive 17th-to-third place drive in China.
