Max Verstappen was left frustrated following Formula 1 qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday night, believing Felipe Massa "ruined" his final Q3 lap that left him sixth at the chequered flag.

Verstappen topped final practice on Saturday afternoon after a setup change overnight, and looked to be in the fight for fourth place on the grid behind Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel heading towards the end of qualifying.

However, Verstappen was unable to capitalise on the opportunity, ailing to sixth behind Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

"We changed the car a lot overnight and it seemed to work well," Verstappen said. "Obviously FP3 doesn't count for a lot, but we looked very competitive and then qualifying was very competitive as well, getting the faster lap times and it felt really good in the car.

"But then my last Q3 run, I was behind Lewis and preparing our laps and just as I went into the final corner, Felipe just dived in front of me and stopped. There was a big gap behind us so I was like 'why did you do that?'

"So I stayed in first gear, first gear all around the corner to make a lap to him and that basically ruined my lap because you have cold tyres, you have a very bad exit out of that last corner and then it's ruined Turn 1 because there is understeer and the tyres are too cold.

"I think it's a shame because we could respect each other a bit more and keep a bit of a gap instead of trying to squeeze in just ahead of the last corner. That's how it is and I cannot change it."

Despite the incident with Massa, Verstappen was generally pleased with his qualifying display, and thinks Red Bull can take the fight to Ferrari in the race on Sunday.

"It was a positive qualifying in general and it will be interesting tomorrow," Verstappen said. "I think we can be close to Ferrari. I think Mercedes will be a little bit too quick, but normally when it's hard on the tyres they tend to struggle a little bit more so you never know."
