China are set to stage a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship next year, if Belgium or Portugal lose the right to stage a race due to the possibility of a tobacco ban in Belgium and circuit safety alterations at the Estoril circuit in Portugal.

The new Zhuhai circuit is one of two reserve venues - South Africa1s Kyalami is the other and reports in Hong Kong state that China is the favourite.

Circuit director Joe Lim Hun-Beng said, ( We are ready, the circuit is up to standard and we are optimistic)

Belgium have until December 31st 1997 to prove their August race will not be affected by a ban on tobacco advertising.
