Many Formula One tems remain concerned that the newly introduced grooved tyres will not be adequately policed in 1998, leading to disqualification and unrest.

The roblem has arisen because the FIA has yet to announce how it will govern tyre wear to ensure that teams cannot gain any advantage from running tyres where the grooves have been worn away.

Rival tyre manufactures Goodyear and Bridgestone have already agreed that no advantage should be evident should teams inadvertently wear the grooves down, but the FIA has replied that it will be keeping a close eye on the situation, and taking action should speeds appear to rise with tyre wear.
