Three times World Champion Michael Schumacher has been told he must wear a certain crash helmet or pay millions of dollars in damages.

Judge Christine Dalcq ruled yesterday in a Belgian court that the German must wear Bell helmets in training and races or else pay $1.1 million for each day he does not.

The Ferrari driver wanted to switch this season from Bell helmets made by Sports Europe to the German brand Schuberth Helme because he felt they had better safety features and was more comfortable.

Daniel Spreutels, the lawyer representing Sports Europe said: "We're very pleased with the decision. Sports Europe has been thoroughly vindicated. It's now very much up to Schumacher - either he wears the helmet or he pays up."

In court, Sports Europe said their contract requires him to wear the item "at each sporting event requiring the use of a helmet for the whole of the 2001 season".

Kindt Cohen of Sports Europe said the company was willing to come to a "mutual agreement" if he wanted to end his contract with Bell.

Schumacher has been wearing Bell helmets since 1992. Bell also supplies helmets to other F1 drivers such as Jacques Villenueve, Mika Hakkinen and Jenson Button.
