Former F1 diver Jean Alesi tested a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-16B yesterday [Tuesday] at the Paul Ricard circuit, France.

Alesi who drove in 201 grand's prix for a number of teams including Ferrari, Benetton, Jordan and Tyrrell got the opportunity as he will race for McLaren's engine suppliers Mercedes this year in the DTM [German Touring Car series].

The Frenchman was enthusiastic about the test and the persistent rain couldn't dampen his spirits.

Alesi told Reuters: "It was a really fantastic day because I arrived at the circuit to find a McLaren with Jean Alesi on the car and it was very special because I have spent all my life battling against McLaren."

The Frenchman will continue at the circuit today [Wednesday] and tomorrow [Thursday]. According to Reuters one of the reasons Alesi was given the nod by McLaren is that he brings with him 'crucial information on McLaren's new tyre suppliers, Michelin'.

Meanwhile it is believed that Alesi is looking to continue his association with F1 in some sort of test driver role for the Woking based team.

Alesi added: "If it would be possible, I would like to give a contribution to the Formula One testing with McLaren [in the future]."

His manager Mario Miyakawa noted: "After this test we will sit together, both parties, and we will discuss things. But he [Alesi] is very keen to do a development job because he really likes to drive Formula One cars."
