The Renault F1 Team this evening announced that 1997 F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve will test for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday.

Villeneuve conducted a seat-fitting at the team's Enstone base this evening, and will begin acclimatising himself to the Renault R24 tomorrow at the Northamptonshire circuit.

"We have reached an agreement for Jacques to test for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday," commented team boss, Flavio Briatore.

"This test might lead to Jacques joining the team for the final three races of the season beginning next week at the Chinese Grand Prix."

Villeneuve, who was dumped by BAR-Honda at the end of last season, could therefore replace Jarno Trulli, who is leaving Renault at the end of 2004, and who has of late, underperformed.

A spokesperson for Renault F1 yesterday denied speculation that this could be the case, telling Crash.net that it was all 'pure media speculation'.

Not quite it would seem.
