McLaren-Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen set the pace today [Wednesday], during the second day of testing at Silverstone.

The Finn, who enjoyed better weather conditions than yesterday - there was only one rain shower - completed 60 laps, his best a 1 minute 16.150 seconds, over two seconds up on the fastest time set by Ralf Schumacher [a 1m 18.014s] on Tuesday.

Pedro de la Rosa was third for the Woking based squad, as they worked on preparations for the final three races of the season.

Takuma Sato meanwhile was 'best of the rest' for BAR-Honda on a 1m 17s, while team-mate Jenson Button was fifth quickest, sandwiched between the Toyota's of Olivier Panis and Ricardo Zonta, in fourth and sixth respectively.

Marc Gene was next up - and the fastest of the two Williams-BMW's - the Spaniard focusing on set-up work and tyre tests for China. Ralf Schumacher was back in ninth in the sister FW26 on a 1m 18.383s, he suffered technical problems and only completed 37 laps.

Tim Newton, test team manager at WilliamsF1, told the teams official website: "Today's session was not as successful as we'd hoped for, Following his installation lap, Ralf suffered a technical problem which forced him to sit out most of the morning while we tried to rectify the situation. We did, however, manage to get Ralf out in the afternoon during which time he completed some tyre tests.

"Meanwhile, Marc Gen? spent the day also completing tyre evaluations with Michelin. Both drivers will return to the track tomorrow for the final day of the test."

Renault's Fernando Alonso and Jacques Villeneuve were the only other two runners on track, the former eighth quickest, while JV completed 70 laps, while getting to grips with the R24 for the first time.

The Canadian, who was dumped last year by BAR, and who has signed a deal with Sauber for 2005, posted a 1m 18.779s, the slowest of the ten runners. It is believed he might race for the Regie at the final three grand's prix of the season, following the announcement that Renault and Jarno Trulli have gone their separate ways.

Testing concludes tomorrow [Thursday].
