Although he watched Ferrari claim a dominant front row lockout in qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso was nonetheless content with his third place starting position at the Istanbul Park circuit.

Acknowledging that it was unlikely he would be able to upset the current run of form for Ferrari over a single lap, Alonso was still under threat from McLaren, Honda and BMW, as well as his own team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, for the role of best of the rest.

Nonetheless, Alonso prevailed and with no cars between himself and Michael Schumacher on the grid, the Spaniard is confident that he will have the package necessary to out pace the Ferraris in the race.

"Third position was a good result for me today," Alonso said. "We knew that we would not have enough to beat the Ferrari package over one timed lap, but we do believe in the consistency of the Michelin tyres and what they can bring us in the race.

"Our preparations have been focused on the race since yesterday morning, so it is a good result for us to be high up in qualifying. I think it will be an exciting start to the race and that we will see a group of cars running together in the opening laps. But we also know that the most important thing tomorrow will be to finish, to bring home points in both championships."
