Jarno Trulli lauded the steps forward made by the Toyota team in the break between the Bahrain and Spanish grands prix after securing a season-best sixth position on the grid for the fourth round in Barcelona.

Having spent the month testing a new aerodynamic package intended to help them close the gap to BMW, Trulli managed to get the most out of the revised car by easing into the top ten shootout and then managing a lap good enough to indeed split Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld in sixth.

The team's best qualifying slot of the season, while Trulli admits he was very nearly forced to sit on the sidelines alongside team-mate Ralf Schumacher, who was eliminated in the first qualifying sector, he claims the car does nonetheless represent a significant step forward.

"That was a good job by the whole team and the mechanics and today was a great result. It was a very difficult qualifying session and we managed to keep cool when it was difficult and really stressful at the beginning. We nearly missed out on making it through Q1 because I hit traffic and I had to do the time on a second lap on old tyres.

Trulli is now looking to translate that single lap pace into a strong performance in the race as he seeks to secure a third consecutive points finish.

"Thankfully we managed it so that was a good job. I was also happy with my lap in Q2, then in Q3 I really went for it on my last run on new tyres and P6 is a great performance. We expected to go well here because we have a new aerodynamics package that seems to be working well. So we have made a good step forward but we will keep pushing to improve more and more."
