Felipe Massa dominated proceedings at the Circuit de Catalunya to claim his second grand prix win in a row, after Fernando Alonso blew his chances with an ambitious first corner move and Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen retired early on.

While Massa disappeared out front, however, Lewis Hamilton consolidated another second place, creating a little more history and moving into sole possession of the world championship lead in the process.

Alonso finally came home in third place, benefiting from Raikkonen's early exit, but was pushed hard again by the BMW team, which claimed another fourth place, this time with Robert Kubica after Nick Heidfeld was forced to retire with gearbox problems. Both Massa and Heidfeld also had problems in the pit, with the Brazilian's car catching light after a fuel spill and Heidfeld having to complete a lap with its front right wheel loose.

Behind the top four, David Coulthard defied gearbox problems with Red Bull's new seamless shift transmission to fend off Nico Rosberg for fifth, while Heikki Kovalainen overcame the need for a third fuel stop to claim seventh. The final point went to Takuma Sato, who opened Super Aguri's account just over than 18 months after the team was formed.
