Nick Heidfeld may have ended the first day of practice for the United States Grand Prix with the third quickest time but he was far from happy with the performance of his car.

Eager to continue the form that took him to second place at the Canadian Grand Prix a week earlier, Heidfeld's second fastest time in the morning session - which eventually led to the third best of the day - appeared to confirm BMW as being strong challengers over the weekend once again.

However, it came after a day spent trying to solve problems with the balance of the F1.07, the German explaining that they are also yet to get the Bridgestone tyres to work.

"After the first session we looked pretty good on the results sheet, but that was only on the sheet I'm afraid. I don't know who ran on which fuel load and used new tyres. But in any case this morning I was already unhappy with the balance of the car and there was very little improvement this afternoon.

"We haven't managed yet to get the tyres to work properly. The car is just sliding too much, but we are working on that."
