Ralf Schumacher made a surprise appearance at the top end of the timesheets in the afternoon practice session for the British Grand Prix, the German hoping this marks a prelude to a stronger weekend.

Schumacher has been under pressure to perform recently but made the most of an improved Toyota package in practice to lift himself up to third position, with team-mate Jarno Trulli providing support just behind in fifth.

Although Schumacher is expecting the changeable weather conditions to play a part in deciding the outcome of this weekend, he is nonetheless hoping his strong start is an indicator of how it will play out for him.

"Our day went well. Both sessions were positive and we had no technical problems so we are quite happy with what we have achieved so far. The wind was strong both in the morning and the afternoon so that made it difficult to make accurate comparisons. But we made it through everything that we had planned so it sets us up well for the rest of the weekend.

"We were quite quick in the afternoon but let's wait and see how we fare tomorrow. We might be lucky with the weather and if it rains then anything can happen. But for now we should aim to qualify both cars in the top ten and then take it from there."
