The four Red Bull-backed cars dominated those missing the cut at the end of the second phase of qualifying for the British Grand Prix, but Mark Webber and David Coulthard will have the benefit of being the best placed of those to miss the top ten.

While the expected top four opted to sit out the last-gasp dash fop a position in the shoot-out - and were joined by a confident BMW Sauber duo - the rest of the field knew that they had to find time on the final run of the session.

Alex Wurz, Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher all took turns to escape from the drop zone - the German having been dumped there by his Toyota team-mate - but there was no gain in time for Webber, Coulthard or Rubens Barrichello, who joined the two Toro Rosso drivers, Scott Speed and Tonio Liuzzi, and the luckless Wurz - who succumbed to Schumacher's improvement - in missing the cut.

Fernando Alonso again topped the times, beating Kimi Raikkonen's soft-rubber best with a flying effort on the harder Bridgestones. Raikkonen remained second, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. BMW's confidence proved slightly misplaced as both Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella ended the session ahead of Robert Kubica, and Heikki Kovalainen and Trulli pushed Nick Heidfeld perilously close to the drop zone.
