Rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton has said that he is feeling confident ahead of the British Grand Prix and that he will do all he can to 'nail it' at Silverstone to delight his home fans.

The Englishman, who currently leads the drivers' championship standings by 14 points and who will start from pole, added that the fact he is on the clean side of the grid should also be an added advantage.

"I feel confident [for the race]," noted the McLaren-Mercedes driver. "We have worked hard this weekend to improve our starts and I think being on the clean side definitely helps. I just can't wait for tomorrow's race now. I am going to do the best job that I can and we will see what happens."

Asked how much of a boost he gets from competing in front of his home fans, Lewis noted that while it is tough to say how many tenths you gain per lap, it is definitely something that spurs him on and something that he really, really appreciates.

"I wouldn't be able to say just how much time you gain but you definitely get a confidence boost," he continued. "To see the support, it's just not one group of people in the stands like it often is in certain areas, certain places. But here it's just the whole grandstand and I can't believe how many people are here. It's been fantastic and I really do appreciate the support."

As for that lap which gave him pole right at the end, Lewis said the key was the first sector: "I've been struggling in sector one. It's where I've been losing two tenths of a second, especially to Fernando [Alonso - my team-mate], so this time I came across the line and going up to the first corner flat out, trying to hold it flat. I didn't do it flat out but I nearly did and so I knew that I had already gained a tenth and a half, nearly two tenths," he explained.

"Then trying to maintain it for the rest of the lap was obviously extremely difficult, but I was able to do it at the last couple of corners. I knew I was up, about three tenths or something.

"When you've got that sort of pressure on you - I could see so many fans out there, it's been fantastic and really to see the support that I've got, it's unreal.

"I pulled out the lap, I was really, really happy when I came across the line and saw the reaction of the fans. It's great to be home and I get an extra buzz from it."
