Kimi Raikkonen silenced the Silverstone crowd by daring to defeat home favourite Lewis Hamilton in the British Grand Prix.

For the second race in a row, Ferrari and the Finn played the fuel strategy to perfection, vaulting him past Hamilton after the opening third of the race and, despite then having to chase Fernando Alonso, moving to the front at the second round of stops.

A mistake - the first of his rookie career - added valuable seconds to Hamilton's first pit-stop and he emerged in third place, where he remained to the end, the Briton unable to make up ground on either his team-mate or Raikkonen as he struggled with understeer that required extra front wing at the final stop.

Felipe Massa removed himself from contention by stalling at the first start, but battled back to fifth place, sandwiched between the BMW Saubers after being just unable to overhaul Robert Kubica.

Renault completed the scorers with Heikki Kovalainen edging team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella in seventh and eighth place after the Toyota challenge faded.
