BMW duo Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica claim they have a good basis from which to build on following practice for the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, the team claiming the day went better than expected.

Eager to put on a good show for their home fans, it is an important weekend commercially for BMW, as well as local driver Heidfeld, the Monchengladbach-born German impressing in the morning session by running inside the top three for its majority before eventually settling for fourth.

A rain shower that washed the rubber away made things somewhat trickier in the afternoon and ninth fastest showed that, but for Heidfeld it doesn't act as an indicator to the remainder of the weekend.

"Our Friday went well, even better than expected before the weekend. In the first session especially we were strong. In the second session the balance of my car wasn't as good, although we didn't change a lot.

"It was down to the track conditions - the rain had washed the rubber away and the wind had changed direction. But as usual the second practice session never really demonstrates our true performance. I think we have a good basis to work from."

Kubica meanwhile shadowed Heidfeld throughout the day, proving fifth best in the morning and tenth fastest in the afternoon. Unlike his team-mate though, the Pole was rather more sanguine about his day.

"The day was quite okay but the weather was so so. The track was a bit wet for the first half an hour of the afternoon session, but then it dried. We did tyre evaluation in the morning and then in the afternoon worked on the set-up, mainly doing research to get the right balance of the car as it is a big change from the last two races."
