Lewis Hamilton was happy to return to the top spot in practice for the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, the championship leader claiming tweaks to the MP4-22 seem to be aiding him this weekend.

Embroiled in a tussle with arch-rival Kimi Raikkonen in both sessions, Hamilton's lap of 1min 32.515secs in the morning was enough to keep him top for the remainder of the day when rain in-between made the afternoon session almost a second slower.

Focusing on tyre evaluation once again, the Nurburgring nonetheless debuts some small changes made to the car in a bid to keep up with Ferrari who have humbled McLaren at the last two grands prix. It is something Hamilton claims should help him re-establish his authority.

"As always we focused on tyre evaluation and general set-up work. Obviously this was affected a bit by the wet weather. However I found a good balance early on and am generally happy with the car. We have introduced some aerodynamic changes this weekend which so far seem to be working well and I know the team has worked really hard since Silverstone.

Although Hamilton was beaten to the top spot in the afternoon by Raikkonen, he did gain additional experience in changing track conditions, a factor that could play a pivotal role this weekend as weather conditions remain unpredictable.

"As I haven't run recently on a drying track I went out to gain some more experience, just in case we need it this weekend."
