Fernando Alonso is expecting weather to play a major factor during the European Grand Prix weekend at the Nurburgring, the Spaniard claiming he is ready if the heavens do indeed open come race day.

Speaking after a day disrupted by the stormy weather conditions currently afflicting much of Western Europe, Alonso believes the wet weather testing at Spa between the British and European races has given McLaren a good basis from which to react if need be.

In the dry though Alonso was on solid form and although he was overshadowed somewhat by team-mate Lewis Hamilton in both sessions, the double champion is nonetheless within firing distance of the front and well placed for qualifying.

"Of course the weather played a role in today's practice with the rain in between the two sessions. However as we knew that it might rain we focused on getting a lot of running in the first session. I struggled with low grip and oversteer but we are working on improving the balance.

"During the second session the track was drying all the time. I think the weather will add an extra challenge this weekend but we did do some wet weather running during last week's test at Spa so we have a good basis. I like this track and hope for a strong performance this weekend."
