Although his wasn't a name that cropped up in the rumour mill, Sakon Yamamoto looks to be on the verge of being confirmed as Spyker's driver for the remainder of the 2007 Formula 1 season.

While the likes of Christian Klien, Narain Karthikeyan and Adrian Valles had all been widely mooted since Christijan Albers was axed from the Spyker line-up following the British Grand Prix, Yamamoto is thought to be bringing a significant amount of money to the team and as a result has won the seat, according to grandprix.com.

Despite that, the Japanese driver does have Formula 1 experience having raced a number of rounds with Super Aguri last year and despite being a relative unknown on the European scene, acquitted himself admirably alongside Takuma Sato.

So far this year Yamamoto has attempted to establish himself in Europe, signing to race in the GP2 Series with BCN Competicion and although his season has yet to produce any points, he has nonetheless not disgraced himself on what are entirely new circuits.

Even so, if confirmed Yamamoto's move to join Adrian Sutil in the Spyker squad will have come as a surprise to many, not least Red Bull refugee Klien who looked hot favourite for the drive when he tested for the team at Spa and had signalled his intentions to make a return to Formula 1 racing having switched to the role of test driver with Honda this year.
