The Formula One world championship will go all the way to the final round of the season at Interlagos after a dramatic Chinese Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton retire and allow his two rivals to fill the top two positions in Shanghai.

Hamilton appeared to be on course, initially, for the win - and the title - and then second place - still good enough for the crown - when he slithered off into the gravel trap bordering the pit-lane while attempting to come in and replace a delaminating right rear.

Unable to rejoin, the Briton recorded the first DNF of his rookie year but, more importantly, allowed Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso into first and second places, enough for both to remain in contention for the crown with one race to go.

Tricky conditions saw all teams start in intermediate rubber, with guesswork then taking over with regard to the switch to 'slicks'. As a result, the top eight took on an unusual look, with Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, Tonio Liuzzi, Nick Heidfeld and David Coulthard following third-placed Felipe Massa across the line.
