Jenson Button proved yet again he is at his best when the track conditions favour the brave after securing both his and Honda's best result of the season in fifth in China.

Qualifying inside the top ten for the third time in four races, the damp and changeable weather conditions managed to play into Button's hands, the Brit's smooth driving style regularly aiding his cause when things got slippery.

However, Button did have to battle his way back into the reckoning after a lacklustre start that left him challenging the mid-field positions.

Nonetheless, a clever strategy got him back into play, getting him as high as fourth and prompting him to, at one point, record the fastest lap of the race. The flurry of good lap times was enough to build a big enough buffer back behind him to drop just a single place when he made his second and final stop.

Holding that to the finish line, fifth place may be a far cry from the podiums he was scoring at this point last year but Button claims a top five at the end of a poor season makes all the difference.

"A fantastic race today and I'm very happy to come away with four points and our best result of the season," Button, who has helped Honda ahead of siblings Super Aguri in the standings, said. "I struggled at the start of the race as the car was not working well in the wet conditions and I had no grip, so I ended up slipping back through the field.

"When the track dried out we decided to pit and go for the dry option tyre and a light fuel load. From then I started setting fastest laps which was a great feeling. It was a fun race with a lot of overtaking and very close driving. it is very satisfying to come away with some good points today."
