Lewis Hamilton may have missed out on the Formula 1 title in Brazil, but the young Briton has been rewarded for his fine debut season with the BRDC Gold Star award.

The Gold Star, presented annually by the British Racing Drivers' Club since 1929, is awarded for international achievement with Hamilton coming out on top following a stunning first year where he won four times and finished just one point away from title winner Kimi Raikkonen.

IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti lies second, with Alan McNish third - although he could be overhauled for third by Andy Priaulx and James Thompson when the World Touring Car Championship season comes to a close in Macau next month.

Hamilton joins the likes of Sir Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Juan Manuel Fangio and James Hunt in taking the Gold Star award.

The McLaren driver will pick up the award at The Savoy in London in December.
