Singapore Telecommunications Limited - commonly known as SingTel - has confirmed that will be the title sponsor for the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix.

The event - the first Formula One race to be held on a street circuit in Asia and the first to run under lights - will be officially known as the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

"We are delighted to clinch title sponsorship of the first-ever night race to be held in F1 history," said SingTel group CEO Chua Sock Koong admitted, "At SingTel, we constantly strive to be at the forefront of our business and the association with this world-first puts the spotlight on our always being at the leading edge through constant innovation."

Citing the usual reasons for sponsoring such as 'being involved with such a renowned international brand with an avid global following' and the compatible focus on 'innovation and synergy', Chua added that 'teamwork and a challenger mindset are the foundation of SingTel's core values, the very same characteristics which we believe set the winning Formula One(TM) driver and the team apart from the pack'.

"The world is watching and this is a great event upon which to position the SingTel brand on an international level, as well as reinforcing Singapore's image as an exciting global city," she added.

Securing a high-profile sponsor also sat well with the event organisers.

"Asia's leading telecommunications company, SingTel has a strong brand as well as a powerful regional and international presence," Singapore GP Pte Ltd's Ong Beng Seng concurred, "These strengths make SingTel the perfect strategic partner and the ideal title sponsor for the Singapore Grand Prix. We look forward to working together on a wide range of high-profile activities as we prepare for race day and what promises to be one of the highlights of next year's calendar."

Further details about the sponsorship will be announced early next year, but F1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone welcomed the newcomer to the fold.

"SingTel is a powerful player in the world of telecommunications and we are delighted to welcome them as the title sponsor of the first ever F1 race in Singapore," he concluded, "Title sponsorship of the [race] will give SingTel the platform to achieve global recognition of their brand."
