For the second time in a matter of weeks, Lewis Hamilton could not convert favourite status into the silverware he desired, after being beaten to the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Overlooked in Monday's news following the confirmation that former McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso would be returning to Renault, Hamilton came second once again after being beaten in viewer voting by Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe on Sunday night's television event.

The F1 rookie had been top of most people's tips ever since taking his first F1 win in Canada in June, but found himself eclipsed by the world super-middleweight champion, who unified the division by claiming the WBO, WBC and WBA belts last month.

And, had fellow pugilist Ricky Hatton succeeded in overcoming Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Hamilton could conceivably found himself pushed back to third place in the voting. The Mancunian, who lost in ten rounds to the American, completed the 'podium' instead.
