Jonny Reid has revealed that he is on the verge of securing a deal that will see him become a test driver for a Formula 1 team.

Reid, who is a regular in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, where he flies the flag for his home country, told the New Zealand Herald on Sunday that he should be able to confirm something very soon.

"I am very, very close [to picking up a F1 deal]," he told the "It would be as a test driver first, like what last year's champion Nico Hulkenberg is doing with Williams.

"If it was a test with a decent team, I would go for it. That would still let me race A1GP because it is in the [F1] off-season. The more you can do as a driver, the better.

"But the other side is A1GP is so young and it's already grown so much, so who knows where it will end up? Do I want to give that up? That's the golden question but it's an exciting future."

Which team or teams he is in talks with however is not clear and with seven of the eleven squads having already announced their test driver or drivers for 2008, his options are limited - with only BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso and Super Aguri still to make appointments.

Reid's focus for now though remains on A1GP and next weekend he will compete on home soil, when the series heads to Taupo, for the fifth round in the 2007-2008 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
