Toto Wolff says there is little doubt Valtteri Bottas will continue with Mercedes for the 2018 Formula 1 season after describing his retainment as a ‘no brainer’.

The Finn has enjoyed a strong first season with the title-winning Mercedes team since replacing Nico Rosberg at the start of the year, Bottas notching up a pair of wins in Russia and Austria, as well as generally keeping up the pressure on Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in the title fight.

Though some doubts about his future had been raised as a result of his one-year deal and talk of potential interest from Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, the confirmation of the former at Ferrari for the next three seasons appears to have removed any lingering doubt that it may not happen.

Indeed, Wolff suggests the only reason for the delay in confirming Bottas is down to contract details rather than it being a question of ‘if’ he stays.

“We are at the right speed. It’s a no brainer as it stands for next year to continue with Valtteri," Wolff said.

"It’s just down to doing to the nitty gritty detail of the paper work and see how it pans out in the future, but I think there is a big chance he will be here next year also.”

Relying Bottas’ deal is confirmed, it will mean Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull head into 2018 with unchanged driver line-ups.
