Nico Hulkenberg was pleased to win the fight to be the 'best of the rest' behind Formula 1's leading three teams in qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix, taking P7 on the grid for Renault.

The close-knit midfield fight between Force India, Williams, Toro Rosso, Haas, Renault and McLaren looks set to continue in Singapore, with all of the teams dicing with Q1 elimination.

Hulkenberg was able to work his way through to Q3 before producing a rapid final lap, taking P7 on the grid and finishing just two-tenths of a second off Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.

After completing his final Q3 lap, Hulkenberg asked Renault over the radio if he beat the McLarens, saying: "**** yeah baby, in your face!" when he found out he did.

"It was pretty good, It was an interesting fight. I personally had that target, I was very determined to be ahead of them and be P7," Hulkenberg said.

"So it was quite satisfying with the last lap to get them."

When asked if Renault could be best of the rest once again on Sunday, Hulkenberg said: "That's what we want to do, for sure. I think we have the pace.

"Our package is good and strong. All goes well, yes."

The changeable nature of the race in Singapore makes strategy hard to plan, and while most teams are expecting a one-stop race, Hulkenberg is not making any firm plans in his head.

"It depends a little bit what happens with safety cars, where they fall, how long they will be," Hulkenbeg said.

"That's always the difficult thing to predict and plan in Singapore.

"It's just unpredictable, so you have to play it as it comes."
