The timesheets for opening practice at Suzuka received a bit of a reshuffle after Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen had his late effort disallowed for cutting across the chicane.

The German's last ditch lap vaulted him to third overall, behind the two McLarens and ahead of compatriot Michael Schumacher's Ferrari, but stewards at the Japanese circuit decided that he had gained an unfair advantage from his short-cut and dropped him back to a lowly ninth position.

Main beneficiaries of Frentzen's demotion were Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Alex Zanardi, Olivier Panis, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve, who all move up a place as a result. Eddie Irvine, languishing in tenth spot after struggling to find a balance on his Ferrari, headed the list of those unable to benefit.
