Guanyu Zhou edged out Luca Ghiotto to claim his maiden FIA Formula 2 pole position in qualifying at Silverstone on Friday evening, heading up a front-row lock-out for UNI-Virtuosi Racing.

Zhou sat on provisional pole after the initial runs in qualifying that left the top four separated by just two-hundredths of a second at one stage, but managed to pull clear with his final effort in the session.

A time of 1m38.182s saw Zhou beat Ghiotto by two-tenths of a second, giving him his maiden F2 pole and marking the first Friday success for a rookie driver in the series this season.

DAMS locked out the second row of the grid with Sergio Sette Camara and Nicholas Latifi, with Louis Deletraz and Callum Ilott taking fifth and sixth place respectively.

Championship leader Nyck de Vries ended the day seventh, while Mick Schumacher qualified 13th for Prema Racing.
