Nyck de Vries breathed fresh life into his FIA Formula 2 title hopes by taking his first victory of the 2019 season in Sunday's Sprint Race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

De Vries arrived in Spain with just one podium finish to his name so far this season and sat 39 points behind standings leader Nicholas Latifi ahead of Sunday's race, but managed to cut the gap by taking a comfortable win.

Starting fourth, de Vries managed to rise to second off the line behind Anthoine Hubert before passing the BWT Arden driver for the lead on Lap 8.

De Vries maintained a healthy gap over the rest of the field through the remainder of the race, eventually crossing the line 2.3 seconds clear of Luca Ghiotto in second.

Ferrari junior Callum Ilott picked up his first F2 podium in third place for Sauber Junior Team by Charouz ahead of Guanyu Zhou. Hubert dropped to fifth by the chequered flag, crossing the line ahead of championship leader Latifi.

Mick Schumacher ended the race 12th for Prema, three places up on his starting position.
