Red Bull junior Juri Vips claimed his maiden pole position in the FIA Formula 3 Championship at Silverstone after edging out Prema Racing duo Marcus Armstrong and Jehan Daruvala in qualifying on Friday evening.

After scoring his first win in the series last time out in Austria, Vips continued his recent good momentum by grabbing pole with a lap of 1m43.902s, edging out Ferrari youngster Armstrong by 0.096 seconds with his final lap in qualifying.

Armstrong had sat four-tenths of a second clear of the field at one stage, but was left to settle for second ahead of teammate Daruvala, who rose up the order with his late run.

Championship leader Robert Shwartzman took sixth in the third Prema entry, trailing Christian Lundgaard and Leonardo Pulcini.
