Williams F1 development driver Lance Stroll has converted his maiden European Formula 3 pole position into a victory in the season opener after beating Prema Powerteam team-mate Nick Cassidy.

The Canadian had initially lost his lead in the sprint off the line but got the better of Cassidy on lap two to power ahead at Paul Ricard. Despite unrelenting pressure from his team-mate, particularly in the latter stages of the race, Stroll held his nerve to claim the win by just over half a second.

George Russell enjoyed a strong first outing with HitechGP to complete the rostrum while his team-mate Ben Barnicoat claimed the top rookie honour in fourth place. Max Gunther, who will start from pole for the next two races in the opening round, rounded out the top five with a comfortable gap to Joel Eriksson in sixth.

Estonian driver Ralf Aron completed the rookie rostrum having taken seventh ahead of fellow debutant Niko Kari, as Harrison Newey and Callum Ilott claimed the final points-paying position.
