Callum Ilott has notched up his maiden European Formula 3 race victory in race two of the season opener in a safety car-punctuated race at Paul Ricard.

After an incident-free race one saw Lance Stroll grab victory from pole position the second race of the weekend was shaken up by two safety car periods at the start and finish of the race.

Max Gunther from pole got a terrible start and was involved in a multiple-car collision at turn one which knocked out the German as well as three other challengers, including race one winner Stroll.

Their Prema Powerteam team-mate Nick Cassidy took full advantage by blasting into the lead but after building a cushion in front he made a mistake midway through the race to drop to third behind Ilott and Ferrari academy driver Guanyu Zhou.

However, there was more drama after the third Prema Powerteam driver Ralf Aron retired from the race after losing his left-rear wheel, which forced a second safety car as his machine and stray wheel needed to be cleared.

It set up a mad final lap dash once the safety car pitted and with the Euro F3 field bunched up it became a frantic scrap for points and podiums. Cassidy and Zhou traded passes by Ilott steered clear from danger to take victory with Cassidy, the only remaining Prema car, in the second and Zhou a respectable third.

Mikkel Jensen claimed fourth ahead of Sergio Sette Camara, with Alessio Lorandi, Ryan Tveter, Anthoine Hubert, Joel Eriksson and Raoul Hyman completing the points-paying places.
