Max Gunther has claimed a hard-fought victory in the last race of the season opener at Paul Ricard after fending off Nick Cassidy in a last corner clash.

The Prema Powerteam team-mates had bolted clear at the front from the start grid and despite Gunther pulling out a gap during the middle third of the race Cassidy reeled him in to step up a final lap fight.

Cassidy, who claimed two runner-up finishes in the first two races at Paul Ricard, was in no mood to settle for a hat-trick of second places and made a late dive up the inside of Gunther at the final corner. His momentum pushed both cars wide but they recovered for a dash to the chequered flag which Gunther won by just 0.251s.

Behind the leaders Eriksson impressed in his debut European Formula 3 championship race weekend to complete the podium ahead of Mikkel Jensen as Lance Stroll rounded out the top five.

Anthonie Hubert was involved in late tangle with Harrison Newey to take sixth ahead of Ralf Aron as Ferrari prot?g? Guanyu Zhou took eighth with Alessio Lorandi and Nikita Mazepin completed the points-paying positions.

After suffering a terrible blast from pole position in race two Gunther enjoyed much stronger start to the final race of the weekend to hold on to the holeshot as the field bottlenecked into turn one.

With Prema Powerteam team-mate Cassidy in close company over the opening laps Gunther controlled from the front before slowly but surely pulling out a one second cushion. Behind them Eriksson made impressive progress through the field to take up third place from Jensen.

As the race ticked down into the closing stages Van Amersfoort Racing duo Hubert and Harrison Newey got in a tangle which sent the British driver into a spin and out of the points places.
