Callum Ilott has claimed a provisional victory in the red-flagged FIA European Formula 3 opener after a huge crash involving Ryan Tveter, Peter Li and Pedros Piquet.

In a dramatic race Ilott's victory will be confirmed by stewards later after they have judged whether or not he passed Maxmilian Gunther on the opening lap under safety car conditions.

Despite good drive from pole position Ilott was passed by Gunther at the exit of turn two but nipped ahead around the outside of turn four just as the safety car board was put out. Ryan Tveter spun at turn two causing Arjun Maini to take avoiding action which put him in the path of Weiron Tan who collided into his rear.

With Maini and Tan out, Tveter limped back into the pits with damage but was able to continue at the back.

After the restart Tveter, looking to charge through back through the field, spun at turn five coming through the gravel but returned on to the track in a cloud of dust on the racing line.

An unsighted Peter Li at full speed smashed into the rear of the stationary Tveter sending himself into a huge corkscrew. In the mayhem Piquet then ran into the side of the damaged Carlin of Tveter and hurtled into the barriers.

Initial reports have declared Li as 'awake and alert' in the medical centre while Tveter is also in the medical centre with smaller injuries and Piquet walked away unharmed.

With Ilott given the provisional win Stroll had nipped ahead of Gunther after the safety car restart to take second with Mikkel Jenson fourth and George Russell fifth.

Nicky Cassidy claimed sixth ahead of Euro F3 rookie David Beckmann as Harrison Newey, Ralf Aron and Ben Barnicoat rounded out the points-paying positions.
