Virgin Racing has become the second team to announce its driver line-up for the 2014/15 Formula E Championship, with former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari and 2013 GP2 runner-up Sam Bird set to compete in the inaugural series.

A return to the motorsport arena for Virgin after a brief foray into Formula 1, the brand - which has involvement across a broad spectrum of industries, including aviation, entertainment and banking -, is one of ten teams lined up to compete in the all-electric series.

The youngest driver to have started an F1 race when he made his debut for Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2009, Alguersuari comes on board after a period out of racing, the Spaniard delighted to be part of the new Formula E project from the start.

"I'm thrilled to be driving for an organisation like Virgin. I'm going to be driving for a great team with a wealth of experience and I can't wait to get out on the streets and put these cars to the test."

Runner-up in the GP2 Series last season, Bird - currently racing in the World Endurance Championship - is also excited by the prospect of trialling the single-seater around an enticing street circuit calendar.

"Formula E is going to be a brilliant experience and I can't wait to get started on what will be an exciting new challenge in my career. I know I'm going to be driving the latest in electric vehicle technology and I'm looking forward to testing myself around the streets of some of the world's most amazing cities."

For Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson, he is delighted to be welcoming two 'young yet experienced' drivers to the fold.

"Jaime and Sam are young yet experienced drivers and fantastic guys off the racetrack to boot. I'm delighted to welcome them both to the Virgin Racing family. Jaime has demonstrated speed and talent at the very highest level whilst Sam is a proven race winner. I am sure they will be a formidable force on the circuits, let sparks fly!"

Virgin becomes the second team to announce its driver line-up, with the Audi Sport Abt having already confirmed Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt.

The first round of the season will take place around the streets of Beijing, China on 13th September.
