Nelson Piquet Jr called his third place finish 'the biggest surprise ever' after he lost radio contact with his China Racing team at round four of the Formula E Championship in Buenos Aires.

Piquet Jr admitted he had no idea of his position after losing communication with his China Racing team midway through the race.

The Brazilian thought he was a lap down on the rest of the pack and as a result he was aiming to steer clear of the fights for position in the final few laps, when in fact he was right in the thick of the action.

"I'm so, so happy with the result, but honestly it was the biggest surprise ever to be third," Piquet Jr said. "We had a communication failure and I left the pit stop thinking that I was a lap behind the leaders. So when all the fighting was happening at the front on the last few laps, I didn't think I was on the lead lap, so I stayed out of the mess."

Piquet Jr profited from the misfortune of a number of drivers ahead of him, after Sebastien Buemi crashed while leading, Di Grassi suffered suspension failure and both Sam Bird and Nick Heidfeld were handed drive-thru penalties.

"I was surprised when I got the chequered flag and found out I was on the podium," he added. "I'm happy the hard work of the team has result in two podiums so far and now we'll improve the communications between now and the next race in Miami."

The Brazilian lined up ninth on the grid and after a long first stint the China Racing driver emerged in 14th position after switching cars.

A safety car period midway through the race meant the Brazilian driver had more energy remaining in his car compared to his rivals and he carved through the field to grab the final spot on the rostrum to earn his second podium finish this season in Formula E.

Piquet Jr sits fifth in the drivers' standings with 37 points, with just 21 points separating the top five in the championship after four races.
