Dragon Racing is stepping up its efforts in the Formula E championship after confirming it will become a fully-fledged powertrain manufacturer for the 2016-17 season.

The American squad which currently the only customer outfit with Venturi engines is set to commence thorough developments for its own powertrains ahead of next season, managing and commercial director Oriol Servia has stated at the pre-event press conference for the Punta del Este ePrix.

"We just want to have full control of the car," Servia said. "At the moment we have been relying on Venturi, who have been great, but we want to be able to put our own package together and beat the rest."

Dragon Racing currently uses the Venturi VM200-FE-01 powertrains for the 2015-16 Formula E championship and Servia also says the team is likely to remain unchanged for next season having finished runner-up in the teams' standings in the inaugural season.

"I'm happy with the drivers and with the changes that we made over the summer, with some hiring on the engineering side," Servia. "If we keep running as we have been, we will get our chance."
