Sam Bird has heaped praise on the new DS Citroen collaboration with his Virgin Racing Formula E squad as he notched up the group's first win of the season at the Buenos Aires ePrix.

The British driver clinched a tense lights-to-flag victory after being made to sweat for his third career Formula E win having come under pressure from different rivals throughout the race.

Bird grabbed the holeshot from pole position by blocking Renault e.Dams driver Nicolas Prost and after fending off pressure from Antonio Felix da Costa and Lucas di Grassi he denied championship leader Sebastien Buemi a last-to-first charge in the final lap to claim the chequered flag by 0.7s.

An ecstatic Bird feels all of his DS Virgin Racing's efforts paid off in the Argentine capital as he wrestled the Spark-Citroen Virgin DSV-01 and its balance issues around the flowing street circuit.

"I'm just so delighted, I'm so happy for the whole team," Bird said. "This is our first win as DS Virgin Racing, we have worked closely with DS Performance since the start of the season to better understand the car and after all this work I'm ecstatic I won on Saturday, not just for myself but for the entire team. This win is for everyone.

"It just felt good to be starting the race with just the track ahead. So far this season I have had a few cars in front of me but this time my grid position couldn't have been better."

As a result of his victory and the three bonus points for pole position, Bird jumps to third in the Formula E drivers' standings, 28 points behind leader Buemi, while DS Virgin Racing closed the gap on third-placed Dragon Racing in the teams' championship to four points.
