Mahindra Racing is set to team up with Magneti Marelli to develop new powertrain parts for the third season of Formula E.

The Italian electronics manufacturer, which has strong links in F1 developing energy-recovery systems and also supplies and manages the common ECU in MotoGP, will work with Mahindra as a commercial partner for the remainder of the 2015-16 Formula E championship while it prepares new units for its third-year car, the M3Electro, which will be debuted later this year.

Mahindra's team principal Dilbagh Gill says he's delighted to welcome Magneti Marelli on board and hopes their units can give his squad a competitive edge for the 2016-17 season.

"We are thrilled to announce this partnership here in Paris," Gill said. "Mahindra Racing has developed a very strong relationship with Magneti Marelli over the past few months while developing our powertrain for the next season.

"As an established EV manufacturer and an FIA Formula E manufacturer, we have a mandate to drive the future of EV technology, and that begins with developing the most innovative ideas and components."

Roberto Dalla, Motorsport Director at Magneti Marelli, is confident the Italian manufacturer can use its experience and knowledge from other championships to improve its efforts in the all-electric series as the technical regulations relax next year, enabling teams to work more independently with the development of its cars.

"We are proud of the partnership with the Mahindra Racing Formula E Team in the very important and challenging FIA Formula E Championship," Dalla said. "Magneti Marelli has brought innovative technologies to multiple racing categories. Formula E allows us to exploit our knowledge in strategic components for hybrid and electric propulsion.

"Performance, efficiency and reliability are going to be key elements to race in season three and we believe that the solution developed with Mahindra Racing will be able to demonstrate the capabilities of Mahindra and Magneti Marelli which will help the team to be successful in the FIA Formula E Championship."

Magneti Marelli branding will appear on the Mahindra livery for the remainder of the 2015-16 season starting this weekend at the inaugural Paris ePrix.
