The factory-backed DS Virgin Racing team will start on pole position for its home round of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship after Sam Bird dominated qualifying for the Paris ePrix.

The British driver made the most of going in the last of the four groups - containing three cars instead of five - during the first phase of qualifying to set the quickest time overall on the evolving circuit, before repeating the feat in the five-strong one lap shootout.

Securing a third pole position for the Virgin Racing run, Citroen-backed team, which competes under its DS Automobiles sub-brand, Bird was three tenths quicker than championship leader Lucas di Grassi, who was second time lucky having only made it into the shootout as the 'lucky loser'.

They denied the strong French contingent from pleasing the home crowd, with Bird's team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne, Stephane Sarrazin and Nicolas Prost flying the tricolore from third, fourth and fifth as the other shootout contenders.

Andretti's Robin Frijns gets away from sixth place, ahead of Oliver Turvey and Sebastien Buemi, the title contender losing out after being second fastest in the generally slower first group. Reigning champion Nelson Piquet Jr and Antonio Felix da Costa complete the top ten.

The first time the centre of Paris has hosted an FIA event, qualifying saw drama early on when Nick Heidfeld crashed towards the end of the lap, only to collect the hapless Mike Conway as he was attempted to recover his car to the pits. They start at the back of the field in 17th and 18th.

Newcomer Ma Qing Hua starts his first race from 15th.
